The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a world-wide symbol of the holidays in New York City. The ceremony will be lit for the first time on Wednesday, December 4th, with live performances from 7–9 pm, at Rockefeller Plaza, between West 48th and West 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The tree will remain lit and can be viewed until 9 pm on January 7, 2020.

This year’s tree is a massive Norway spruce that’s 72 feet tall and weighs some 12 tons. It came from the Wallkill, NY, farm of Shirley Figuero and Lisette Gutierrez. They found out that the tree had been noticed by scouts for Rockefeller Center after they purchased the property. After a 2-day journey, it’s ready to be decorated with over 50,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire, and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star that weighs 900 pounds and has 3 million crystals. Tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and hundreds of millions watch the Tree Lighting Ceremony broadcast live across the globe. And you can be there, enjoying the goings on from a VIP platform at the skating rink directly adjacent to the tree. It will remain lit from 5:30 am until 9 pm until January 7.
The event really marks the beginning of the Christmas season in NYC.
