Today, it’s organized by the Sundance Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and promoting independent filmmakers, performers and composers.
The movies that hit it big at Sundance are destined for greatness. Legends who’ve made their big break here include Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Jim Jarmusch and many others. And now newcomers like Raven Jackson and Rachael Abigail Holder have the same chance at film glory.

When Is Sundance 2027? Estimated Dates
The next edition of the legendary Sundance Film Festival is expected to kick off on Thursday, January 21, 2027, (estimated date) in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. Festival organizers have not yet confirmed the official date, but we’ll let you know when they do. This will be the festival’s first year in its new home.
Traditionally, screenings are scheduled daily through the end of the month for 11 days and nights of unforgettable premieres and incredible parties. That’s right. After moving to a virtual format briefly due to the pandemic, 2027 promises to be a great year for Sundance. According to organizers, the upcoming festival will include approximately 90 feature films and more than 50 shorts. The lineup includes everything from the artistic and imaginative to animated features and thought-provoking documentaries on tough topics.
Why Is Sundance Moving to Boulder in 2027?
It’s official: The Sundance Film Festival is leaving its long-term home of Park City, Utah, after the 2026 season. Officials reported that the popular film festival had essentially outgrown the quaint ski community, causing crowding and elevated prices at hotels and other accommodations. Additionally, the foundation’s long-term agreement with the city was set to expire.
Sundance has been held in scenic Park City, Utah, and select venues in Salt Lake City for more than three decades. However, in 2027, the festival is moving about 500 away to trendy Boulder, Colorado, which will be its new permanent home. Basically, Boulder offers more room for this prestigious film festival to grow without leaving it’s Western heritage behind. Organizers were even considering Cincinnati as a possible candidate. Thank goodness they didn’t! Not to cast shade, but Boulder was the clear winner with its charming small-town vibe and vibrant arts-forward culture.
Boulder has been named one of the happiest, healthiest communities in the States, so it’s a great place to visit. It’s a foodie’s paradise with its farm-to-table dining scene and lively farmers market. It offers miles of hiking in addition to plenty of upscale boutiques and shops in the pedestrian-friendly Pearl Street Mall. No matter where Sundance is held, the lineup of premieres and parties will be spectacular. We hope to see you there!
